This spring field series offers a joyful exploration into how local plants can be used for health and wellness. Discover the medicine right outside your door! Participants will:
-learn about dozens of local plants, and deepen their knowledge through a focused study of nine (including taste, touch, smell, botanical family, medicinal actions, energetics, contraindications and more)
-make a broad range of medicinal preps in the field, including an herbal smoothie, tincture, poultice, balm, clay paste, and more.
-identify and explore medicinal plants in three unique field sites: an organic farm, a home garden, and a wild landscape
The curriculum is designed to build the essential skills needed for using local herbs for health and wellness, and includes a mixture of lecture, plant walks, experiential activities and demonstrations. Participants will leave each class with a freshly made herbal prep, relevant hand-outs, and a template for three personalized herbal monographs for local medicinal plants. A framework for self-study between classes will be provided and encouraged.
Who should take this series?
This series is designed for beginning herbalists who have dabbled with herbal medicine and are looking to deepen their practical skills with local herbs. Those who have taken Rachel Berry’s “Introduction to Home-Scale Herbalism” are encouraged to enroll, as well as others who have been exploring herbal medicine on their own and wish to deepen their practice. Participants should be comfortable walking and learning in an outdoor environment.
Each class in the series will be held at different outdoor location, offering participants the opportunity to learn directly from the live plants. Locations have been selected to provide a broad surface area for learning, and include an organic farm, a home garden, and a wild landscape. All locations will be within 5 to 25 minutes of downtown Nevada City. Directions to each location will be emailed to registered participants.
“The class was very well planned, fun, and taught me a lot. I will take it again. Can’t thank you enough for the things you taught me. 🙂” -Cindy G, Field Medicine Making, Spring Season
